Mallard in Russia
В центре Челябинска, в том месте где река Миасс не замерзает на зиму, каждый год в полыньях зимуют утки кряквы.

Hi !
I just updated my journal with a long post about the birdwatching I did over the winter , the highpoint was a 6km walk along the Maritza River during which I saw 36 species , among which a Black Woodpecker . It's an interesting area , lots of great cormorants and some pygmy , too . In the winter , there's a huge gathering of pygmy cormorants along Maritza , it's amazing , especially at sunset , hundreds of cormorants flying all around you !

A description of how our trip went + photos of long-eared owls , great and pygmy cormorants , house sparrows , a kingfisher and a black woodpecker .

filled the feeders
I filled the feeders with sunflower seeds last week. All the chickadees, nuthatches and hairy woodpeckers immediately found them.

They like how I let the tree alonside the house grow up. They sit in it between flights to the feeder.

They also like the big Varigated Japanese Willow that has taken over the yard. It's a huge spot for them to retreat to.

I found the suet feeder the other day.

I bought a huge amount of beef kidney fat from a butcher shop for twenty cents a pound. I use it for making soap, but this is so handy to have it to fill the feeder.

Only I need a window to put it outside of.

I think I will climb up onto the loft and open that little window and put a nail in the top of the frame and hang it in front of that window. I only see white sky out of that window all winter. That woudl be foth good for me and good for the birds! I think I'll do that today!

I wonder why I don't get different birds, though.

Birdpost!
I'd like to plug this new site, it seems pretty cool and fellow bird watchers may be interested:

http://www.birdpost.com/

I currently have the 8th biggest lifelist on the site. XD
That'll change soon, though, I'm sure!

Hiya, back with another video...
Kaikoura (New Zealand) is home to a bird nesting site.
Lots of noisy seagulls about, and I took this video of some geese that walked past me while I was looking at the seals.

Reed's Beach NJ

went down to reed's Beach, hoping to see some mating horseshoe crabs and spot some Red Knots and Ruddy Turnstones.

Didn't see a single live horseshoe crab,  but got to the birds,  afterwards, went to Cape May,  got some nice shots of Forester's Terns in flight.

There are some photos, that i put "?" in caption.   If any one can help ID these that would be great.

juvenile pileated woodpecker

3:02 PM

A baby pileated woodpecker flew out of the marsh woods and onto their telephone pole. After awhile he went inside. He’s much shorter than his parents. I love that I can lie here in my hammock in my alder woven walled tipi in the marsh and watch them like that!
